BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH HIP HOP *** THIS IMMERSIVE, DISCUSSION-BASED COURSE EXPLORES THE CULTURAL AND SOCIAL DIMENSIONS OF HIP HOP AS A FORCE FOR COMMUNITY BUILDING, COLLABORATION, AND CREATIVE EXPRESSION. STUDENTS WILL ENAGAGE WITH HIP HOP'S CORE ELEMENTS- GRAFFITI, DJING, MCING/RAP, BREAKING, AND KNOWLEDGE- THROUGH MOVEMENT SESSIONS, FILM SCREENINGS, READINGS, CRITICAL DISCUSSIONS, AND PARTICIPATION IN LOCAL COMMUNITY SPACES. USING HIP HOP AS BOTH PERSONAL EXPRESSION AND A TOOL FOR SOCIAL CHANGE, THIS COURSE EMPOWERS STUDENTS TO NAVIGATE AND CONTRIBUTE MEANINGFULLY TO THE COMMUNITIES THEY ENTER.
Catalog Description:
Explores histories, philosophies, and cultures of hip hop, street, and club dances, such as social and party dances, breaking, house, waacking, vogueing, popping, and locking, that were developed by Black and Latine communities in response to systematic oppression. Combines lecture, discussion, reading, viewing, and movement practice. Recommended: DANCE 286, DANCE 386, or community practice in hip hop, street, or club dance.
