Student Groups Kick Off Spring Quarter with Free Workshops and a Show

Submitted by Lisa Kwak on April 4, 2019 - 5:08pm

The Dance Student Association (DSA), and the Arts Diversity Council (ADC), two student-led organizations affiliated with the Department of Dance, have come back to school prepared with many exciting events in the Spring Quarter. The DSA hosts a myriad of dance related events throughout the year and raises funds for student scholarships. The ADC is a cross disciplinary student-council that provides support to marginalized students, primarily of color, involved in the arts at UW. Both organizations are instrumental in providing further opportunities for students at the Department of Dance.

On Saturday April 6th, the ADC will offer a free Visual Arts class, “Restorative Sketching Workshop,” taught by local artist, Xavier Roache. This workshop is meant to help students to refuel their creative energy and have fun. Roache is a Seattle-based artist of color who is passionate about self expression through visual art and community. He has taught at some of Seattle’s most elite visual art institutions, Gage Academy of the Arts, and Seattle Art Museum.

Then on April 13th, the DSA will be hosting three, free, master classes that are open to all students across campus. The dance genres being taught include, contemporary, jazz, and commercial style urban dance. All classes will be taught by dance majors and minors in the department.

Finally, on April 19th and 20th, DSA will present its first spring-time show: APEX. APEX, a sequal to the annual DSA fall-time show, INFLUX,  is a student produced and choreographed concert, where twelve students will present a diverse range of work. All proceeds from APEX will go towards the 2019 DSA Scholarships that are awarded annually to select students in the Department of Dance at the end of the quarter.
