Biography

Cindy Lao is graduating this spring from the University of Washington earning a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and a Bachelor of Science in Public Health. As a first grade student in China, she was introduced to dance and trained in ballet and Chinese classical dance as part of her school’s curriculum. Circumstances prevented her from studying dance after immigrating to the U.S. at the age of nine, which led her to train in cross country/track and violin. Cindy’s passion for dance was reignited when she connected with dance at the UW. She primarily trains in the dance forms of contemporary modern and ballet, and performed in the MFA Concert and UW Dance Presents Concert in choreography by Alia Swersky and Nia-Amina Minor, respectively. While Cindy will pursue graduate study in public health and dietetics, she plans to keep dance an active and sustaining part of her life

What is one of your favorite moments from your time with the Department of Dance?

I love the vibes during performance week- the fun group warmups, shenanigans in the dressing rooms, and adrenaline rush of dancing on stage. I feel so grateful to be a part of the process and share the joy with other dancers.

What plans or goals do you have for post-graduation?

I plan to either work full-time in Seattle or move to Melbourne for a year before completing a Master's program in Public Health and Dietetics.
