Possession premiered on September 28, 1994, at the Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts in Richmond, VA. It was co-commissioned by Virginia Commonwealth University, the Bates Dance Festival in Lewiston, ME, and the NYU Tisch Summer Dance Residency Program. The creation of Possession was funded, in part, by the New England Foundation for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Carpenter Foundation. Possession is loosely based on images from the A.S. Byatt novel of the same name.
