Congratulations to Professor of English and Dance Catherine Cole who has been recognized with the 2025 American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR) Distinguished Scholar Award!
As explained in her award letter, “The Distinguished Scholar Award is the Society’s highest recognition, presented annually to a scholar whose body of work has profoundly shaped the field of theatre and performance studies. This award acknowledges sustained excellence in scholarship, visionary leadership, and a deep commitment to advancing the vitality and reach of our discipline.”
The selection committee recognized that Professor Cole’s scholarship “has consistently modeled how theatre research can reckon with histories of colonialism, state violence, and inequality, while also opening imaginative space for repair, reconciliation, and human flourishing.” Furthermore, the selection committee recognized that in addition to her published work, "She has nurtured new generations of scholars and helped sustain the field.”
