Happy Summer,
Hope this finds you well and that you and yours are healthy and happy.
I recently promised a dear friend to send out more newsletters as she is not on social media. So here some hight lights of 2016 at this mid point, and some upcoming events in the near future. I try to keep it short, but it has been a full year already.
FILM
We, my collaborator Hester Jonkhout and myself are putting the final touches on my new film UN DIA KADA MOMENTU (One Day At The Time) portraid above. We had a pre-premiere at Teatro Luna Blou on Curaçao on May 30 with Leo Floridas in attendance. Keep your eyes and ears out for more announcements for this labor of love.
My other film Kasita will be now available for everyone to see on Kweli.TV, a new venture that I urge you to support ( and not just my film).
COMMUNITY
This year I continued to serve my communities in any way I can. As you may know I have been appointed by Mayor de Blasio as a member of the Cultural Affairs Advisory Committee, a very interesting task, where I hope to be of service. I also started as advisory board member at Dance NYC a advocacy organization for dance in this city that does incredible work for this city under the steward ship of Lane Harwell.
On the subject of Community I received last month the "GEORGIE award from my St. George Community and from Curtis High School for support of Art Programs. I feel honored and humbled to receive this award.
TEACHING
Excited to share that I accepted the position of Professor of Professional Practice at Barnard College Dance Department at Columbia University, I will be developing a Dance on Camera there, teaching dance and more. I am grateful to have both my artistic practice as a filmmaker and choreographer align. I will still do some curating and as always I continue to create.
PODCAST
I was interviewed by Dr. Rhea Zimmerman for her inspirational Podcast. You can listen to it HERE.
Thank you so much for your support and reading,
Gabri
