WE WILL FOCUS ON ZAPATEO (SHOE TAPPING) AS PRACTICED IN AND AROUND THE CAPITAL CITY OF LIMA. **** ZAPATEO INVOLVES A VARIETY OF RHYTHMS USING THE BODY (HEEL, BALL, SOLE, HANDS, OR ON THE BODY). **** HARD SOLE SHOES REQUIRED (TAP SHOES NOT REQUIRED).
Catalog Description:
Covers one or more of the following Afro-Peruvian dance genres: festejo, zapateo, lando, zamacueca, and/or marinera. Studio-based course that focuses on movement practice developed by African-descent populations in the Peruvian coast. Includes an introduction to the cultural, historical, and sociopolitical context in which the dances emerged and evolved. Recommended: at least one quarter (or equivalent community practice) of dance (any genre).
