AFRO-PERUVIAN ZAPATEO INTRODUCES THE AFRO-PERUVIAN STYLE OF STEP DANCE CALLED ZAPATEO (SHOE TAPPING) DEVELOPED AMONG AFRICAN DESCENT POPULATIONS IN THE PERUVIAN COAST. ZAPATEO INVOLVES A VARIETY OF RHYTHMS USING DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE BODY (HEEL, BALL, SOLE, HANDS, HITTING AGAINST THE FLOOR OR ON THE BODY). STUDENTS WILL LEARN BOTH GROUP CHOREOGRAPHY AS WELL AS COUNTERPOINT IMPROVISATION PROPER OF THIS TRADITION.
Catalog Description:
Covers one or more of the following Afro-Peruvian dance genres: festejo, zapateo, lando, zamacueca, and/or marinera. Studio-based course that focuses on movement practice developed by African-descent populations in the Peruvian coast. Includes an introduction to the cultural, historical, and sociopolitical context in which the dances emerged and evolved. Recommended: at least one quarter (or equivalent community practice) of dance (any genre).
