African Dance II Placement Criteria
Criteria for Placement into African Dance II: Dance 380, Intermediate African Dance Techniques
- Have the ability to ground through accurate placement of feet, pelvis, torso and head
- Be able to demonstrate heavyweight release and shifting to demonstrate comfort with throwing own body weight
- Establishment of comfort and control with the isolation of chest and hips
- Articulation of spinal undulation
- Clarity in execution of pathways of the arms
- Evidence of sustained strength, stamina and athleticism
- Visible clarity and control while executing movements with individual expressivity
- Retention of movement combinations (extended and complex)
- Consistent ability to listen and understand rhythmic drum patterns
- Comfort with 4/4 and 6/8 rhythms and polyrhythmic patterns
- Ability to hear and respond to percussive cues to start, stop or change movements
- Demonstrated synchronicity of movements to drum patterns
- Dynamic, deliberate and confident projection of movement
- Attention to transitions
- Ability to grasp and retain movement sequencing
- Commitment to learning process and development through self-correction and the ability to easily implement feedback
