“Respond to Call” is a reflection of the jumbled process of its creation. It is built from the deconstruction of a traditional Zimbabwean rhythm called Mhande. The dance strays far from, and back to, the rhythm and movement patterns Mhande traditions offer. The arrangement reflects the interruption of our in-person routines and interactions, accommodating our separation while challenging us to create new movements together. We echo each other through call and response, while being held together by the calming, cyclical, and repetitive nature of the rhythm of the music. The sections choreographed by Rujeko move between contemporary and neo-traditional Zimbabwean dance styles. The performers' solos and duets reflect their responses to our shared rhythms.

A light-hearted tap dance quartet with a live jazz trio filmed on the Meany stage. With an intimate Jazz club vibe, the dancers are dressed in suits with a touch of silliness, fuzzy animal masks and martini glasses. The dancers are the melody and the rhythm; composed specifically for tappers to dance to, the music and rhythm are the heart of this piece—a true “tapper’s delight.”
shifting here now

Inspired by the ideas of changing identity and stability in this new time, the first section is a series of six reflective solos created in collaboration with the dancers. The second section’s creation was driven by the music, the joy of movement syncing with rhythm, and the desire to match the energy of these young, contemporary dancers. Filmed in Magnuson and Ravenna parks, this is the choreographer’s first collaboration with filmmaker and dancer Devin Muñoz.
The following four solos are part of the Choreographic Gift project, inspired by “For You Productions”. Dancers decided to whom they wanted to present a gift and interviewed that person. Directors/choreographers then collaborated with the dancers on creating a dance film for the gift recipient.
