\nWhat is bst?
\nbst is a residency designed to support local dance artists by offerin g the gift of space and time during the UW Department of Dance “off” times \, when formal classes are not in session. bst offers the opportunity to e xperiment\, make “mistakes”\, revise ideas\, and remain focused on the cre ative process without the pressure that accompanies commissioned works or performance deadlines. The UW Department of Dance has la rge\, beautiful studios\, including one where shoes can be worn\, and tap is permitted. It is preferred for recipients to use their own Bluetoot h sound system (the Department is in the process of replacing its system). The residency seeks to support dance artists in the making of new work an d the exploration of original ideas that may or may not culminate in a per formance or methodology. bst supports innovative ideas while connecting th e University to the vibrant Seattle dance community. Artists at all stages of their careers may apply.
\nStudios will be available from 9:00A M – 9:00PM. For safety reasons\, recipients will be asked to develop a set schedule of their studio usage so that the Department can monitor access to the studios and the building. Recipients will also be asked comply with the Department's standard usage guidelines \, and security precautions.

For UW Department of Dance events\, there is a $3 per single ticket processing fee for mail\, phone and online orders. He is the first South Asian to be sponsored by the dancewear giant Capezio\, to receive a residency at the historic American Tap Dance Foundation\, and to perform in the worldwide sensation STOMP. He has performed on TV with Good Morning America\, NBC’s New Amsterdam\, and So You Think You Can Dance\, in commercials for J. Crew and Vogue\, and o n stage for 50\,000 people at the Houston Texans stadium for the President of the United States. His company\, Project Convergence\, is known for un iting tap dance with Bharatanatyam\, a classical Indian percussive dance f orm. They have performed at Lincoln Center and Alvin Ailey while being fea tured in The New York Times and The Hindu. Vikas is a guest instructor at Broadway Dance Center and Columbia University and is sought after around t he world for his ability to challenge and inspire his students.

As a creative partnership within Undercurrent\ , Alethea Alexander and Hilary Grumman have been making work together sinc e 2023. Their collaborative performance projects have been presented at Ac tualize SPACE (2024)\, Pike Street Plaza (2025)\, Cornish Playhouse (2024) \, Mutuus Studio (2023)\, and 12th Ave Arts (forthcoming 2026). About the Artists
Vikas Arun
Vikas is a performer and choreographer from Seattle specializing in tap\, contemporary\, and various forms of Indian dance. He is the first So uth Asian to be sponsored by the dancewear giant Capezio\, to receive a re sidency at the historic American Tap Dance Foundation\, and to perform in the worldwide sensation STOMP. He has performed on TV with Good Morning Am erica\, NBC’s New Amsterdam\, and So You Think You Can Dance\, in commerci als for J. Crew and Vogue\, and on stage for 50\,000 people at the Houston Texans stadium for the President of the United States. His company\, Proj ect Convergence\, is known for uniting tap dance with Bharatanatyam\, a cl assical Indian percussive dance form. They have performed at Lincoln Cente r and Alvin Ailey while being featured in The New York Times and The Hindu . Vikas is a guest instructor at Broadway Dance Center and Columbia Univer sity and is sought after around the world for his ability to challenge and inspire his students.
Undercurrent\; Hilary Grumman and Alethea Al exander
Undercurrent is invested in researching the relevance and p otential of rigorous and specific dance technique within the performance s etting. Our work emerges from deep investigations into the joyride of floo rwork technique–practiced with a seamless\, fluid\, and muscular continuit y\, and an eye for the thrill of kinesthesia. At our core\, we hold the be lief that communal care precedes the possibility of risk\, and that attune ment to collectivism is a vital and precious practice.
As a creative partnership within Undercurrent\, Alethea Alexander and Hilary Grumman ha ve been making work together since 2023. Their collaborative performance p rojects have been presented at Actualize SPACE (2024)\, Pike Street Plaza (2025)\, Cornish Playhouse (2024)\, Mutuus Studio (2023)\, and 12th Ave Ar ts (forthcoming 2026). Their partnership has been supported by Walk Don’t Run\, 4Culture\, Cornish College of the Arts\, Mosswood Hollow Retreat Cen ter\, University of Washington\, Velocity Dance Center\, Glenn Kawasaki (v ia the University of Washington Department of Dance)\, Abbey Arts\, and CO -.
Building on her sustained floorwork research since 2011\, Hilary co-founded Undercurrent in 2017 and has since cultivated the company’s te chnique and choreographic direction. Alethea has been contributing to Unde rcurrent’s evolving pedagogical and choreographic scope since 2023. Togeth er\, they have been presented at workshops including the Festival Internat ional de Danza Contemporánea de la Ciudad de México (Mexico City\, 2024)\, Seattle Festival of Dance + Improvisation (2025\, 2026)\, NVA & Guests (N ew York City\, 2026)\, Ground Grooves (Seattle\, 2024)\, and Undercurrent × Ballet Rituals (Duvall\, 2024). Prior to their partnership\, Hilary led Undercurrent intensives and performances across the United States as well as internationally.

Hybrid Dance Lab
Join the UW Department of Dance Kawasaki Guest Artist Amy O'N eal\, 23 UW dance students\, and Seattle guest artists for a Spring Hybrid Dance Lab (HDL). This performance plus dance party is a research and perf ormance platform for experimental street dance practitioners to challenge traditional notions of street dance in theater\, address creative hybridit y\, and nurture cultural literacy.

About t he Performance
Amy O’Neal\, a 2026 Guggenheim Fellow in Choreo graphy\, has been working with students for the Spring quarter in a ch oreographic lab course. Over 10 weeks\, Amy has been sharing practices fro m her experiences as a contemporary\, hip hop\, and house practitioner and how she has evolved to merge these forms mindfully over the course of her nearly 30 year dance career. Three times a week\, students met to train i n a consistent functional movement warm-up\, hip hop and house foundations \, and freestyle and composition exercises that draw connections between t hese forms while honoring their differences. Every student is coming from different dance backgrounds and explored how to bring all their experience s forward in their dancing to make what they do more powerful\, connected\ , and expressive.

LaTasha Barnes is an internationally recognized and awarded dance artist\, tradition-bearer of Black American Social Dance\, a renowned educator and tenured faculty as Associate Prof o f Dance at Arizona State University.
